{4.1a} atomic notes

topics:

an atomic note is one that holds a single self-contained thought (or "unit of knowledge", more broadly). this helps keep notes unambiguous and allows you to reference individual ideas that can be fruitful in combinational creativity. i believe this term was popularized by Andy Matuschak as an extension of luhmann's Zettelkasten method.

this is in contrast to running or outline notes based on theme, subject matter, or topic.

for example, you might have a single document for everything you learn about notetaking:

# notetaking
## why notetaking matters
- improves retention and supports critical thinking
- supports creativity
- keeps you from passively consuming

## types of notetaking systems
- outline / bullet-point notes
- atomic notes
- mind mapping

you might build on the outline over time, adding sub-points as you learn more about each topic or idea.

this same information split into atomic notes might look like:

# notetaking
- [[notetaking improves retention while supporting creativity and critial thinking]]
- [[active notetaking prevents passive consumption]]
- [[running outline notes]]
- [[atomic notes]]
- [[mind mapping]]

in this case, each linked item ([[]]) is its own document; instead of referencing a single notetaking file, i can reference files for different systems or benefits of notetaking, meaning i can re-use them throughout my vault even when i’m writing about a completely different topic.

atomic notes are beneficial in several ways, including:

don’t stress over when to make something an atomic note; note change, combine, and break apart over time anyway.
